Cultivation Techniques

  • The price of black gram in Sri Lanka is increasing day by day. With the government halting imports, the environment is conducive for local farmers to rely on lentils.
  • In the Vanni and Vavuniya areas, upland cultivation takes place during the monsoon season depending on rainfall.
  • Although there are many varieties of black gram, it is important to select and plant high yielding varieties.
  •  In the case of lentils, most of the cultivation is done in the month of November.
  • Cultivation is also done in the month of April. However, the yield is slightly lower in the month of April.
  •  If Blackgram planted in one acre, 7 kg of seeds are required.
  • Apply 10 tons of farm yard manure per acre and plow two or three times without weeds.
  • Seeds should be treated and sown in Jivamirtham or Panchakavia for two hours before sowing. Doing so will prevent root-related diseases and increase germination.
  • Flowers begin to appear 25 days after sowing. Temor solution should be applied in the evening at this time so that the shedding of flowers is controlled and begins to bear more fruit.
  • Use Jivamirtha with water at least once a week.
  • By doing this the plants will start to grow very quickly and healthily, and may get too many flowers.
  • Peas are ready for harvest within 75 to 80 days after sowing.
  • It takes 90 days to harvest and prepare for sale. The maximum yield is up to 750 kg per acre.

A special technology is in use for green gram and lentils in Pudukottai constituency in Tanjore district pf India. The selected soil should be rich in organic matter and alluvial soil. The crop should be sown in January-February in the summer before. In addition 25 to 30 kg of urea should be applied within 40 to 45 days of top dressing. Legumes are indeterminant growth, so will give us extra pods. The crop will get the first harvest in 60 to 65 days and the second harvest can be done in the next 20 to 25 days. Therefore, it can be harvested in two installments within 100 days. Yield is 30-40% higher than normal.
